The Sajid Khan Foundation launched a dedicated project in the underserved districts of Badin and Tharparkar aimed at promoting the fundamental right to education among marginalized and vulnerable communities. Recognizing the multiple barriers these communities face—ranging from limited awareness about education rights to inadequate school infrastructure—the initiative focused on creating awareness, improving facilities, and strengthening local governance structures. By emphasizing community involvement, the project sought to empower families and local stakeholders to take ownership of their children’s education and advocate for better resources.
A critical component of the project involved conducting baseline surveys and community meetings, which helped identify the key challenges hindering education in these areas. These activities informed targeted interventions such as improving basic infrastructure in 20 local schools by building proper toilets and ensuring access to clean, potable water—essential factors directly impacting student attendance and health. Additionally, the foundation worked closely with 50 School Management Committees (SMCs), providing them with training on effective school governance, financial management, and community mobilization. This capacity building helped create accountable and responsive leadership at the grassroots level.
The combined efforts of awareness raising, infrastructure upgrades, and governance strengthening yielded tangible results, including a significant 30% reduction in dropout rates within the project’s targeted communities. Over 10,000 community members were reached through campaigns that emphasized the importance of education and the constitutional rights of children to attend school. By addressing both physical and social barriers to schooling, the project has laid the foundation for long-term educational improvements, fostering a culture that values learning and ensures better access for marginalized children in Sindh.
